The CEC transport has established itself as a highly regarded CD playback product in high end audio. It's also a great pleasure to operate and most of all, aesthetically beautiful to the eye. Just Gorgeous!! So, does the sound complement it's looks? Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed. The sonics came through with boring mediocrity and without life. It seems to lack imaging and resolution as well as pace. The bass sounded sloppy, undefined, and not well extended --All looks and NO brains we shouted! This thing needs some hotrodding! Our goal for this transport was an attempt to produce reference quality, lifelike sound essentially meaning a cost-no-object modification. After removing the chassis we were (again) disappointed at the lack of sophistication of the internals. There really was not all that much to work with here. "Well, we'll do what we can." my brother said, and away we went. This mod replaces every electrolytic capacitor with the very best Non-polar and FK Black Gates. All voltage regulation is now executed by the awesome Audiocom Q-power discrete regulators. The diodes have been changed to soft-recovery type and most importantly, the jitter has been substantially reduced by the use of the legendary Superclock and Superclock Power Supply. We also wired all internal connections with Audio Consulting's pure silver solid core wire. We must say we were quite surprised at the "sonic transformation" this piece went through. The resolution and detail are now amazingly better. The bass is now fast, tight, and defined with excellent extension. It also better captures the vividness and pace of live music without sounding overly etched. Vocals sound present, yet relaxed, and overall the sound now leans toward real and accurate rather than euphonic and colored. Definitely a tremendous step forward to audio nirvana! Upgrade This upgrade involves replacing stock electrolytic capacitors with Black Gate non-polars and FK types; replacing stock diodes with soft recovery types; replacing the stock oscillator with Audiocom's Superclock II and Superclock II power supply wired with Audio Consulting's pure silver wire; and replacing the stock three pin voltage regulators with Audiocom's Q-power discrete regulators.
