Product Code: P1000 Price: Check Latest For nearly 5 years the "high-end" industry has been in disarray with the the new high resolution digital formats of SACD and DVD-A. The 3 major SACD players: Sony, Marantz, and Philips have not only created a spectacular new medium but have also produced countless number of hybrid players at incredibly affordable prices with amazingly good sound. This has created a "hot bed" for the recent frenzy and popularity of high-end digital audio modification. Consumers now have the ability to purchase relatively "bargain basement" players and apply very high quality aftermarket parts and circuits achieving sound reproduction that competes with the most expensive and elite. We felt it was now time to develop a player modification that will give the high-end enthusiast absolute reference quality sound from one of these affordable players. Our next project looks into a stage III modification to the Philips SACD1000. The heart of the mod focuses on the output stage and power supply. Since the transformer coupling approach was a success in the Marantz SA8260 it went without saying that it would work nicely in the Philips as well. Replacing the entire active output stage with a pair of very high quality 1:2 silver transformers(Audio Consulting) is pure magic! The door to sound opens completely. The music is now much less bounded to the speakers with a sense of freedom, air, and much more lifelike character. As shown in the picture, the transformers are snuggly mounted in a custom oak support and wired with Audio Consulting silver wire for optimal sound. The power supply was the next major upgrade. Since the output stage is now passive we only need to feed the dac chip and clock circuit(Superclock). In our experience the power supply is simply the most important element of audio. Starting with good mains(a completely relevant yet separate discussion altogether) the first and probably the most overlooked part of the power supply is the power transformer. We replaced the poor performing stock toroidal with the Audio Consulting M6X low flux density transformer. The rectification is handled by soft-recovery diodes, a Blackgate L-cancelling pair for filtering, and Audiocom's discrete Q-power regulators for final voltage. A custom made oak shelf is used as a support for the power supply for optimum sound. This power supply is an extraordinary improvement. All we can say is that it allows an amazing amount music to come into the room! Upgrades Clock Upgrade - Includes the Superclock II, DAC decoupling Black Gate capacitors, and Audio Consulting's wire. Switch Mode Supply Upgrade - Includes replacement Black Gate capacitors consisting mostly of non-polar type and soft recovery diodes. Output Stage Transformer Upgrade - Includes Audio Consulting's silver wired coupling transformer, wire, and wood mounting block. Linear Power Supply Replacement - Replaces the whole linear power supply.
