Wadia, known to music lovers as a brilliant and innovative digital audio company, has produced superb pieces throughout the 90's and likely many to come into the new millennium. Our next mod focuses on their previous reference transport, the Wadia 7. When paired with the Wadia 9 DAC (Wadia's previous reference DAC) it was a sonic marvel with some claiming pair to be the best available. Of course, as technological advancements and new discoveries are made our old references get replaced by the new as our curious ears want to hear more and more musical emotion and truth. The Wadia 7 is a massively built 2 piece transport. The power supply chassis contains 2 toroidal transformers and psu parts with an umbilical cord feeding the main chassis. The main chassis contains the P2-S mechanism, by and far the heaviest duty mechanism we have ever seen. Also, most of the decoupling capacitors, regulators, as well as all the IC's are found here.

Initial listening proved... well, would you have guessed it, a bit disappointing. Although, I would have to say it seemed to extract more information than the stock CEC TL-1X but it lacked involvement sounding rather analytical. Basically, a counterpart of the CEC TL-1X.

Our approach for modification came in 3 phases: Power supply upgrades, jitter reduction, and finally addressing mains distortion.

Within the PSU chassis we first changed the rectification to soft recovery diodes and installed Black Gate FK capacitors for reservoir storage. In the main chassis a slew of Black Gate capacitors, Audiocom super regulators, and diodes were also fitted. The first stage brought about noticeable improvements in clarity and resolution. It made much of the analytical grunge go away resulting in a more natural presentation.

Second, we installed the Audiocom Superclock in the main chassis. This was a bit more difficult to fit due to space but gains were substantial. A much more relaxed and spacious soundstage appeared and tones seemed to become more palpable and textured. Highs really opened up. Man...jitter is just a killer in transports!

Finally, we went back to the PSU chassis and installed the Audio Consulting mains chokes. They are quite large and are placed in series between the IEC input and the power transformers. A little tricky to fit but we managed to suspend them in the chassis with tie-wraps making it quite suitable in size for this unit. The chokes are marvelous!! The music is now so listenable. It is hard to imagine that even after all the previous mods in a reference level transport we were listening to so much hash and grain. We now feel this is the very best sounding transport we have heard to date easily bettering our Meridian 500 reference modification. For those of you looking for a reference solution this may very well be it- The Wadia 7 by Reference Audio Mods.
